The Global Theological Seminary (GTS) was established in 1991 for pastoral training in the Global Evangelical Church when the then Synod approved of a modular pastoral training programme for the Church. The core mandate of the Seminary is to provide sound theological and non-theological education, aiming at raising upright and effective Christian workers and leaders to serve the Church and society.

History of Global Theological Seminary(cont'd)

Training began at the Presbyterian Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon in 1991 with 36 candidates under the designation: “Modular Course for Ministerial Formation”.  In 1998/99, the Modular training programme was redesigned with a new syllabus pitched at the level commensurate with such courses at other reputable theological institutions, worldwide.  In the same year, the Christian Leadership Institute (CLI) was set up at Adenta, Accra to house the pastoral training and also cater for various training programmes for the laity in the Church. The name of the institution was changed to Global Theological Seminary in 2003 with the aim of upgrading it to a full-fledged tertiary institution.

The Seminary had an institutional affiliation with The Seminary Extension Programme (SET) of the Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. between 1999 and 2003. Between 2000 and 2019, another affiliation was forged with the School of Theology of the Virginia Union University (STVU) in Richmond, Virginia. In January 2020, the Association for Christian Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA) awarded an Affiliate Status Accreditation to the Seminary’s Diploma in Theology programme offered in both residential and modular formats. The Seminary matriculated a first batch of 52 students into the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Post-Graduate Certificate in Christian Studies programme in 2021. This is a one-year foundational programme after which students who would perform satisfactorily could progress to pursue a Master of Arts Degree programme in either Global Leadership or Theological Studies.
